Virginia Lottery initiative to offer online betting
The Virginia Lottery is opening up a new world of online betting, hoping that people will soon be able to play the lottery online.
Recently some cities in Hampton Roads have cracked down on online betting shops, but if some in Richmond and in Washington D.C. have their way, it will be feasible to bet online legally through the state lottery.
“There are billions of dollars being spent online in betting activities. When it is legalized I think we in Virginia want to be ready to offer to our players,” stated Paula Otto, Executive Director of Virginia Lottery.
The recession caused a dip in lottery sales and income. spoke persons with the Virginia lottery claim they may turn to the internet to raise their profits.
“Instead of scratching off a ticket that you would buy at a retailer and having to brush away the latex, you might do that electronically,” Otto stated.
Bets could be placed through cell phone applications and online betting.
“In Europe there are some models where you do see some sort of scenario play out. Maybe it’s a horse racing game, and then there is an electronic horse racing game,” she added.
Before anything happens, lotto spoke persons claim they have got to come up with restrictions and safeguards for things like controlling bet limits and verifying birthdates.
“For the lottery to continue to be relevant, same kind of presence and same kind of ability online.”
Lottery spoke persons claim laws will be presented soon in Congress, that if passed, would open up some venues for internet betting. If Congress were to change the federal laws, our state legislatures would still have to do the same.
