Taxes proposed on UK online betting
International online betting sites could be forced to pay tax on Irish bets if the official Opposition in the Irish parliament gets its way, it was reported Thursday.
According to the Great Britain Press release, Irish Labour Party spokesperson stated offshore betting conmpanies and bookmakers - including telephone and television operators - would be brought under a new 1.5% levy for the industry in its proposals to extend taxation. This would replace the existing 1% tax in betting shops and amount to Euro 90 million for the Horse and Greyhound Racing Fund, the spokesperson stated.
Labour’s sports spokeswoman, Mary Upton, stated operators declining to pay the taxes would be banned in Ireland.
The Irish move follows recent initiatives by the British government to extend “secondary licensing” and taxation to offshore online betting corporations providing online betting facilities to Great Britain residents
